Firs Primary School – Reignition Curriculum.
Ready For Learning, Ready For Life.
“The common thread that runs through the current lived experiences of our children, is loss. From loss emanates three significant dynamics that will impact majorly on the mental health of our children. Anxiety, trauma and bereavement are powerful forces. For them all to appear at once in an untimely and unplanned fashion is significant for the developing child. Our children are vulnerable at this time, and their mental-health fragile. And on top of that, they are witnessing a sea of adult anxiety, which they unwittingly are absorbing.”
(Carpenter and Carpenter, 2020).
Nobody quite knows how adversely affected our children have been by the absence of daily routine schools provide. From evidence based research available to the school, we can assume some will have felt acutely the anguish caused by the lack of social interaction or feel loss from not being able to undertake the informal rituals of school life.
It underlines that schools are so much more than places which provide education – they are about people. Firs Primary School is a community; we embody values, we model relationships required for modern life to function. Therefore, as we support our children returning to school from September 2020, gradually and safely, our attention shifts as much towards helping children come back to us and each other as it necessitates considering the formal curriculum.
Our Reignition Curriculum is designed to ensure we continue to support children to be Ready For Learning and Ready For Life. Firs Reignition Curriculum has been built and designed using evidence based research from the work of Barry Carpenter (2020); taken from his Recovery Curriculum model and aligned to the school’s vision, values and curriculum model.
